A Serendipitous Discovery
It was a humid morning deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Fabiola and I were walking through the jungle setting up small breeding areas for a species of frog called a Giant Waxy monkey frog and sourcing sustainably harvested medicinal plants. As the sun filtered through the dense canopy, I noticed something unusual near the base of a towering kapok tree. A tiny, trembling bundle of fur lay nestled among the leaves—an orphaned baby three-toed sloth.
The baby sloth, barely a few weeks old, was weak, dehydrated, and clearly in distress. It was apparent that the little creature's chances of survival were slim without immediate intervention.
Swift Action and Compassionate Care
Without hesitation, I gently picked up the baby sloth and carried it back to our base camp. The team quickly mobilized, setting up a makeshift sanctuary to provide the care the sloth desperately needed. We named her "Selva," the Spanish word for "Jungle,".
We worked tirelessly to nurse Selva back to health. Fabiola being 5 months pregnant it was great practice for her being up for hourly feedings. Selva was given a special diet rich in essential nutrients, and we made sure she stayed warm and comfortable. Her tiny, fragile body began to regain strength, and her eyes, once
clouded with fear, started to sparkle with life.
Building a Safe Haven
We constructed a safe enclosure that mimicked her natural habitat, complete with branches to climb and foliage to explore.

Our experience with Selva reinforced our commitment to wildlife conservation. Selva's Bright Future
As days turned into weeks, then months Selva's progress was remarkable. She began to exhibit natural sloth behaviors, climbing and exploring her surroundings with growing confidence and now lives free in one of the tallest trees in our preserve munching on Cecropia leaves all day. Her recovery was a testament to the resilience of nature and the power of compassion.
Watching Selva climb a tree and disappear into the canopy was a moment of profound fulfillment. Her rescue and rehabilitation were a testament to the difference that compassion, dedication, and collaboration can make.
